Picking starts early in Darwin rural area for Asian mango varieties

Asian mango varieties have started to be picked in the Darwin rural area, months earlier than the bulk of the Top End's crop.

More well known mango varieties like Kensington Pride and R2E2 usually start to be harvested around September in the Darwin region.

The Huynh family has been picking small volumes of honey mangoes on their Berry Springs farm since May.

Nhut Huynh said this year's honey mangoes ripened earlier than usual.

"In the beginning we were starting to get a lot of ripe ones but because cockatoos started coming in we had to pick real early [in the morning]," he said.

"We are getting a lot of good colouring, not as much sap burn.

"The only problem we have now is because a while ago we had a lot of rain which stains the mangoes and it degrades the quality."

The tear-drop shaped mangoes are sold to Asian markets in Sydney and Melbourne.

Mr Huynh said honey mangoes were little-known outside the Asian markets but should be more popular because of their early ripening.

"If more people were to know about [honey mangoes] … I think people love sweet stuff and people would go for it," he said.

"It just needs to be known and promoted.

"These types come out so early compared to Kensington Prides, I think if they were [better known] we would have a much bigger market."

Kensington Pride mangoes set for early harvest

Many of the Huynh family's 5,000 Kensington Pride trees have set fruit and look ready to be picked in early August.

"We are getting some [big] mangoes, there are some that are as big as my fist, so I am pretty happy with that," Mr Huynh said.

"Hopefully in about six weeks or so we will be starting to pick."

An early harvest is also expected in Katherine, with predictions of first picking in early September.
