Pick of the week: 9 great things to do in Dublin this weekend

You know that Christmas is definitely coming when panto season starts! The Gaiety Panto this year is Aladdin - just one of our selection of the best ways to have fun in Dublin this weekend....

THEATRE

9 To 5 The Musical at BGE Theatre (until Saturday)

Louise Redknapp stars in the stage adaptation of the 1980 movie of the same name, based around the songs of Dolly Parton. The musical tells the story of three workmates pushed to boiling point by their sexist and egotistical boss.

POLITICS

Festival of Politics at Tailor’s Hall (until Sunday)

Get your politics on this weekend at Tailor’s Hall in The Liberties, with a series of talks and events around issues as diverse as soccer, veganism, Dublin’s cultural scene and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

CINEMA

Frozen 2 (out on Friday)

Get ready for another batch of songs to take over your life over the next few months – if not much, much longer. The sequel to the original movie from 2013 (yes, six years ago!) is finally here. You don’t need me to explain the finer points of the plot – it’s the kids’ movie of Christmas 2019.

GIG

Portico Quartet at the Sugar Club (Friday)

British jazz is enjoying a massive revival these days, but Portico Quartet are true trailblazers, having been mashing up jazz and electronica for nearly 15 years. Catch them in the cosy – and seated, if you get down in time – surroundings of the Sugar Club.

FOOD

The Winter Wine & Cheese Festival (Friday until Saturday 14th December)

The main wine and cheese festival may have taken place over the summer, but everyone know how well that particular combo goes with those long winter nights. Get into the mood at Jam Park in Swords.

Meanwhile, the EatYard crew have moved to the northside along with their hosts The Bernard Shaw. Find them all at Cross Guns Bridge on the Glasnevin/Phibsborough boundary.

RUNNING

MoRun Dublin at the Phoenix Park (Saturday)

This is the 10th anniversary year of MoRunning – fundraising fun runs in aid of Movember and the fight to improve men’s health. There are three races – 1.5km, 5km and 10km – and although online entries have closed, you can still register on the morning of the race. See here for details.

CLUB

The Big Romance’s 1st Birthday (Saturday)

It’s a well deserved first birthday bash from one of the city’s best new bars – The Big Romance on Parnell Street. As well as a selection of top-class craft beers from their rotating taps – and 50% off all drinks from 1-7pm – you can enjoy some of the city’s best DJs playing vinyl-only sets on the bar’s amazing, audiophile sound system.

TALK

My Favourite Murder at BGE Theatre (Sunday and Monday)

If you’re into true crime, this is a must – podcasters Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark will be in town to put their signature comic slant on some of the most heinous crimes in history. Part of the Dublin Podcast Festival .

PANTOMIME

The cast of Aladdin as they launch this year's Gaiety Panto at the Gaiety Theatre (Photocall Ireland)

Aladdin at the Gaiety Theatre (from Sunday)

Get into the festive spirit and enjoy all the usual family fun in the company of Joe Conlan as Widow Twankey, Nicholas Grennell as Abanazer, West End talent Julian Capolei as Aladdin and Suzie Seweify as Princess Jasmine.
