The Bjelke-Petersen School of Physical Culture was founded in 1892 as a medical gymnasium in Tasmania, and was initially concerned with improving the health of men and women. Over the years Physical Culture, perhaps better known as Physie, has modernised to include elements of dance. Today thousands of women participate, although Physie remains difficult to define.
In this exhibition, Lyndal Irons contemporary photographs are shown alongside vintage Sam Hood images from the State Library’s collection that tell Physie’s unique history.
