Physical distancing could be reintroduced in Scotland as John Swinney makes football matches verdict

Physical distancing measures could be introduced in Scotland if cases continue to rise, according to the Deputy First Minister.

It comes after Nicola Sturgeon warned at a Scottish Government briefing yesterday she could not rule out reimposing Covid restrictions as the number of new daily cases in Scotland hit the highest level ever.

Speaking earlier today John Swinney, who is also the Minister for Covid Recovery, said a number of measures could be put in place to curb the levels of infections across the country.

During the briefing Sturgeon announced that over the previous 24-hour period Scotland recorded its highest number of daily cases with 4,323 new infections recorded.

In that same time period 10 new deaths from coronavirus were recorded.

Swinney was asked on Good Morning Scotland what measures could be reimposed, he said: "Obviously there are quite a range of factors or options we have available.

"There are some baseline measures that we would reinforce the necessity of people complying with.

"Whether that's the voluntary aspects of trying to exercise physical distancing where that is possible to do so.

"Or whether that's following the mandatory requirements to wear face covering s in certain indoor settings and in other contexts.

"There's obviously the messages about hand hygiene and cough etiquette that we have concentrated on over the course of the period.

"All of these things can contribute as baseline measures to avoiding the spread of the virus."

Swinney also said the Government is not currently considering cancelling large events like football matches and gigs.
