PHUKET: The resort island's airport has switched to its "winter schedule" to accommodate an increased number of flights as local businesses and authorities brace themselves for the tourist high season.
Phet Chancharoen, director of Phuket airport, said management is making adjustments to handle the greater number of passengers passing through the airport.
He said the airport has switched to "winter" mode which runs from Oct 29 through to March 24 next year as part of steps to alleviate inconveniences to travellers.
According to Mr Phet, the airport is anticipating increased air traffic with the number of flights likely to exceed 300 and the number of passengers exceeding 50,000 passengers daily during the high season.
"We will open the renovated section of the terminal on Nov 27 which will ease discomfort and inconvenience to travellers," he said.
Meanwhile, Phuket provincial authorities are also making preparations to support the 24th Laguna Phuket Triathlon next month.
The Laguna Phuket Triathlon, which is expected to draw more than 1,000 local and foreign athletes, is scheduled to take place on Nov 18-19 in the resort complex in Thalang district.
Speaking at Monday's meeting, deputy governor Prakob Wongmaneerung said local officials will fully support the event which has become synonymous with the province.
"There will be participating athletes from several countries, so all sectors should be good hosts and join hands in making the competition an impressive event," he said.
Prapa Hemmin, director of Laguna Phuket Tri's Event, said the event involves cooperation from all sectors and seeks to promote Phuket as a top destination and demonstrate that it would be capable of staging a regional sports event.
According to Ms Prapa, Nov 18 will feature charity 5km and 10km fun runs aimed at raising funds for the "Khon La Kao" (take one step each) project, initiated by rocker Toon Bodyslam, while Nov 19 will feature the triathlon proper, which comprises a 1.8km swim, 50km bike ride and 12km run for individuals and teams.
