Phuket is studying plans to widen the gateway road onto the island, with authorities examining options to ease congestion and improve traffic flow.
Officials at a recent meeting reviewed the survey and design for the expansion of Highway 402 between the Sarasin Bridge and the Tha Chatchai checkpoint, the main road link connecting Phuket with the mainland.
The Department of Highways is studying an upgrade of the 2.3-kilometre section to four or more lanes to accommodate growing traffic volumes, reduce congestion and improve road safety for motorists entering and leaving the province.
A 15-month study began in March and is scheduled for completion in June 2027. It includes engineering surveys, bridge and drainage design, intersection improvements and preparation of an environmental impact assessment (EIA).
Consultants told the meeting that the route passes through mangrove and coastal areas, requiring careful environmental assessment. Sensitive sites, including communities, schools, temples, mosques and childcare centres in Tha Chatchai and Ban Tha Nun, will also be considered, they said.
Several development options are being assessed, including a four-lane highway with a raised median, a depressed median and an elevated road section. The highways department said public consultations would be held throughout the study period before a final design is selected.
The project forms part of Phuket’s long-term transport infrastructure plans to support economic growth and tourism expansion.
Funding for the road expansion will be sought after the study and EIA process are completed, said Nirat Pongsitthaworn, the former governor who was transferred off the island on Tuesday because of a feud with his two deputies.
