Photos show swimmer rescued from Bristol Channel after being caught in rip tide

This is the moment an elderly man was rescued from the Bristol Channel after swimming into a rip tide.

Lifeguards were luckily already on Weston-super-Mare's beach when they noticed the 72-year-old man not making progress in the water.

They observed him paddling for around five minutes and not moving any closer to the shore - which was around 15 metre away.

After calling out to him, they agreed for the avid swimmer to make his way to a nearby rock for a lifeboat to arrive.

Weston coastguard Jeff Gunton said: "He had spoken to us before getting into the water because we were down there with the RNLI open day

"He told us he swam around there quite often.

"We noticed he wasn't making any headway so we watched him for a bit.

"We then called out to see if he needed any help and he replied he better had.

"We advised from our view point for him to head for a rock and we would send the lifeboat to pick him up. They arrived and quickly had him on board.

"He was exhausted but otherwise unharmed."

Jeff said it was quite unusual to get caught in a rip tide near Weston but the water can be very unpreditable.
