Photos show shocking damage after Bedlington blaze causes streets to be evacuated

Photos have emerged showing the extensive damage caused by a fire in Northumberland which led to several streets being evacuated.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service attended the sheds fire at around 11.30pm on Saturday night at Pioneer Terrace in the Bedlington Station area.

Alongside Northumbria Police, the North East Ambulance Service and staff from Northumberland County Council, fire crews had to temporarily evacuate neighbours to a rest centre at Contract Gym on Station Road.

This morning, charred remains of the sheds could be seen as firefighters wearing facemasks looked through the debris.

The sheds contained acetylene canisters and other cylinders which the fire service said posed an "explosive risk".

A spokesperson for Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service said overnight: "There is a fire in the Bedlington Station area involving sheds which contain acetylene and other cylinders and is, therefore, an explosive risk.

"We are evacuating properties and request that everybody stay away from the area."

The evacuated streets were Pioneer Terrace, Station Road, Waverley Avenue, Wallington Close and Brambling Lee.

Three crews from Pegswood and two crews from West Hartford attended using breathing apparatus, jets and ground monitors to bring the situation under control.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, crews were able to cool the cylinders and make the area safe allowing families to return home.

The fire service said: "Northumberland Fire and Rescue have now made the cylinders safe, and the area is now safe with residents able to return to their properties.

"The fire service remain on the scene and will be conducting their investigations."

Following the blaze, the fire service has thanked residents for their patience and understanding in supporting the emergency services in dealing with this incident.

They also praised the efforts of Contract Gym and Aunty Jo's on Station Road, Bedlington who made their premises into a rest centre and looked after the evacuated families.

Northumberland County Council said the combined efforts of all those responding to the incident ensured there were no injuries to anyone.

The Fire Investigation team remained on site into the early hours to conduct their investigations and further investigations with Northumbria Police will be conducted throughout Sunday.
