Photos show foam on Cascade Steps near city centre fountains

A huge pile of foam collected at the bottom of the Cascade Steps in the city centre by the harbourside yesterday. A local resident snapped a photograph of what they say has become an annual event. It is not known if the spectacle was down to pranksters.

While it's not quite the event of September 2019, when someone poured soap into the fountains, there was a significant amount of foam at around 11am, when this photo was taken. In 2019, pranksters poured bubble bath into the steps, creating a foaming fountain. A crowd gathered around the steps on, with video footage showing what looked to be an 'ocean of foam'.

Families with young children, friends and masses of people took the opportunity to enjoy themselves with an impromptu foam party in what one person called 'the most foam they had ever seen'. The year before that, a bottle of washing-up liquid was emptied there too, creating another fountain of foamy bubbles in the heart of the city. And the previous year saw an unexpected bubble bath, too.
