Photos show 'disgusting' hospital room which 'looked like a squat'

A disgusted daughter has blasted the hospital her mum was receiving treatment at, claiming it "looked like a squat".

Chantelle Boakye said her mum was admitted into a room at the Royal Liverpool Hospital on 21 January which she says left her feeling disgusted by "filthy floors", "taped up windows" and "a hole in the wall".

The room her mum was in was also very cold due to the poor state of the windows, which Chantelle says the wind was able to get into the room despite tape covering cracks, report Liverpool ECHO.

A new hospital, which was due to open in 2017, has been heavily delayed, with costs to build and run the new hospital projected to reach over £1billion.

In response to Chantelle's claims, the hospital said repairs are due to be made soon.

Chantelle said: "She was initially in A&E because there wasn't any beds available and then they moved her to this ward.

"It was absolutely disgusting. She was that shocked she phoned me and told me it was a joke.

"I can't believe it, I've never seen anything like it before. It looked like a squat or a derelict building."

The 37-year-old took photos in the room which show a hole in the wall, dirty floors, duct tape around the window frames and a boarded up window.

Chantelle said: "The floor was filthy, it was disgusting, she had to call the cleaners in to clean it.

"There's a hole in one of the walls and a window with no blind on which is boarded up.

"The worst part about it was that you could feel the cold and the wind coming in through the windows, which they've tried to cover with tape."

She added: "I'm absolutely disgusted.

"I don't think it's acceptable for people that are sick and who could be at risk of infection to stay in rooms like that.

"When I complained about it they said there was nothing they can do."

Colin Hont, deputy chief nurse, at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, said: “We would like to apologise to Ms Boakye and her mother for the experience described in a room on one of our wards earlier in the week.

"The room had recently been subject to one of our regular rolling checks as part of our enhanced maintenance monitoring programme and these issues were reported to our estates and facilities team, who are due to make repairs soon.

"All rooms are cleaned throughout the day.

"If Ms Boakye would like to discuss her concerns with us, our Patient Advice and Complaints Team can be contacted on 0151 706 4903.
