Photos show Cornwall and parts of Wales blanketed in snow as the white stuff hits the UK shutting roads and schools

Snow has been falling in Wales and England overnight with an "essential travel only" warning in place in parts of Cornwall and some schools in Wales closed. Dozens of schools in Cornwall have been shut today and some in Wales, including Ysgol Bryn Eilan in Conwy, where pupils were told the school had to close for "health and safety" reasons. See the full list of schools here.

Some roads in Wales were closed overnight as temperatures dropped to -7.7°C in parts of Wales and Dyfed Powys Police warned of "treacherous conditions" on some roads in Powys. On Tuesday morning, part of the A470 in Powys was closed because of flooding between Rhayader and Llangurig.

The Caerphilly Mountain road was also closed overnight, and Leckwith Road in Cardiff. This was the scene in Caerwys on Tuesday morning. Lorna Doran said: "Woke up to a carpet of snow in Caerwys. It's beautiful, but probably means I'm not moving anywhere today."

Police in the south west of England have urged members of the public to stay indoors "unless it’s an emergency" - and say cars and lorries are stuck in the snow. Devon & Cornwall Police issued a plea on social media earlier this morning.

Some flurries there were so heavy that the A30 near Newquay and A39 near Truro have been blocked since the early hours of this Tuesday (January 17).

They said : "Police are urging drivers to travel with caution as heavy snow showers sweep across the region. A30 Carland Cross near Newquay is currently blocked due to snow, Highways are aware. Please allow extra time for any journey and drive with care."

Dozens of schools in Cornwall also confirmed they were closing or opening late.
