Afghanistan

I took this during some time off while on assignment in Afghanistan. With the mountains behind us and the soldiers overlooking the pitch I was invited to join a pick-up cricket game. I didn’t know the rules – ignorant American here – but I was included. The Afghans taught me the basics and in the end I was able to make runs and was fielding well enough. That to me was the universal language of sport; regardless of barriers and culture sport will unite. Photograph: Ivan Flores

One of our players brought a drone along to a match last summer and took a set of photos of the ground from above. It was a beautiful day, we won the match and we got a completely different view of the place where we love to play.

This is me with Chris Wood, now the ECB’s Inspector of Pitches, in 1993. I was his assistant at the Shenley Cricket Centre back in 1993-94, I now accompany him on ground visits during the season, many happy memories of when he took me to The Oval. Photograph: Claire Pedder
