Photos of life on the streets of Knowsley towns in the 1960s will transport you back in time

These fascinating historic images offer a glimpse into the not too distant past of some Merseyside towns.

And they were taken before the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley even existed.

In 1974, the borough of Knowsley was formed and became responsible for the districts of Cronton , Halewood , Huyton , Kirkby , Knowsley, Prescot , Tarbock , Whiston and the area of Cantril Farm, now Stockbridge Village .

But these pictures, taken in the 1960s, show what life was like in some of the towns just prior to the creation of the borough, for families, workers and local residents.

From crowded shoppers bustling around Kirkby market to Ford Capris rolling off the production line at the Halewood motor plant, the different towns across the borough have a long and rich history of local businesses, famous industries and loyal customers.

Throughout the decade, the towns also experienced notable changes, such as Harold Wilson, MP for Huyton, becoming Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and the opening and closures of different buildings, such as the popular Lime House Cinema in Prescot which closed in July 1960.

The 1960s also saw the development of houses and new schools, as the towns began to become more populated.

These images are from our archives, the majority being courtesy of Mirrorpix and some with unknown copyright.
