Photos of backpacker Amelia Bambridge's dead body shared on Facebook and Instagram

Photos showing the dead body of British backpacker Amelia Bambridge, who was found at sea after going missing in Cambodia, have been shared on social media.

The 21-year-old's devastated family begged Facebook and Instagram to remove the images, one of which showed Ms Bambridge's tattooed arm covered in sand.

Images of the tragic backpacker began appearing on social media after her body was found a week after she went missing on Koh Ring island.

Locals posted a photo that appeared to show her floating in the water after fishermen found her.

Another image was uploaded to Instagram by a US ghoul famed for gory posts of bodies, foetuses and severed limbs, the Mirror reports.

In Facebook's community standards for violence and graphic content, the platform said it bans content which includes images of dying, wounded or dead people who are dismembered, burned or the victims of cannibalism.

It is understood the offending images were eventually removed after Facebook was alerted to them.

A Facebook spokesman said: "We're saddened by the news about Amelia Bambridge and our thoughts go out to her family and friends

"We have clear rules against posting graphic content, when we are made aware of this content we remove it

"People often use Facebook and Instagram to share stories in the news and this can result in content appearing that some may find upsetting."

Ms Bambridge was reported missing after staff at Police Beach, a private venue on the island, found her purple rucksack containing her purse, phone and bank cards the day after a beach party on October 23.

Her family travelled out to the island from the UK to join the search for her amid fears she may have drowned.

Her body was recovered a week later around 60 miles from where she went missing.

Police believe she accidentally drowned.
