Photos from Vera's final episode reveal Brenda Blethyn's detective hedging her bets

TV favourite Vera will face her last case in the current series this Sunday and, having pulled off some masterstroke detective work over the past three weeks, this time she's going to the dogs - in the best possible sense.

As the images below show, the fourth and final episode of series 10 on ITV will see Vera star Brenda Blethyn at Sunderland Greyhound Stadium in a storyline featuring a betting shop magnate.

The photographs offering a first look at Sunday night's drama were taken while cast and crew were filming in the North East for the series finale.

Here's what happens in this week's murder investigation.

Episode four of Vera - The Escape Turn

Vera is called into action when Alun Wilmott is shot and killed on returning home early to find his property being invaded.

At first it's assumed his death is the result of a burglary gone wrong - the culprits have escaped with a huge amount of cash from Wilmott's safe, leaving his wife Louise and daughter Jess traumatised.

But it doesn't take log before the wily Vera suspects an inside job and she targets  Ciaran Duggan, a former violent offender who now - apparently a reformed character - is the head of private security in the affluent neighbourhood.

As Blethyn's Vera investigates victim Wilmott's life, she discovers he was a paranoid and possessive man whose family and business interests were being targeted on all sides.

His passion project - a greyhound racing stadium where his empire first began - has become a drain on company funds in the age of online gambling and in the face of ruthless cost-cutting business policies both disgruntled gamblers and overworked bookmakers had called for him to be sacked.

And, said a show spokesman, "the truth behind Alun’s tragic death may be far more insidious and meticulously planned than first appears".

The Escape Turn will air on ITV on Sunday, February 2 at 8pm.
