Photos from around Wales as snow falls and yellow weather warning remains in place

Snow is falling across Wales as the country remains under a yellow weather warning on Friday, January 8.

Many people awoke to a coating of white, following some of the coldest temperatures of the year so far.

The mercury dropped to 2C in parts of Snowdonia overnight and 1C near Cardiff, setting the foundation for wintry conditions to develop.

North Wales has seen some of the highest accumulations since Thursday evening, leading to disruption on local roadways.

Two police cars got stuck in heavy snow while trying to rescue a motorist who skidded off the road in North Wales. Read more about it here.

Police said the driver made a 20-mile journey from Ellesmere Port to Moel Famau Country Park, which straddles Flintshire and Denbighshire.

Officers said the traveller ignored the road closure and lost control of the car after skidding on ice, which caused the vehicle to veer off the road.

While rescuing the motorist, two North Wales Police cars became stuck in the heavy snow. Frustrated officers then had to call out a local volunteer rescue group to assist them.

Snow has also resulted in traffic problems on the A55, A541 and the A949.

Further south, many missed out on the snowfall, reporting only ice after another frigid night.

In Cardiff, Roath Park Lake has frozen over after several days of temperatures hovering near the freezing mark.

The yellow weather warning is set to continue for all 22 of Wales' local authorities for the duration of Friday.

Patchy rain, sleet and snow is forecast at times, with ice expected to be the most widespread hazard.

However, the high ground of Wales could end up with with 2-5cm of snow.

"Elsewhere, whilst some snowfall is possible, accumulations are likely to be slight and temporary," the Met Office said.

While only essential travel is currently permitted in Wales, anyone who must head out should be alert for freezing fog patches, which could reduce visibility less than 100 m at times.
