Photos from around Wales as snow falls across large parts of the country

The first significant snowfall of the winter has arrived in Wales, with the country just narrowly missing a white Christmas.

Snow blanketed several parts of Wales overnight into Monday, causing slow travel and difficult road conditions. A yellow weather warning for snow and ice remains in effect until 6pm, with the chance of 1-3cm accumulating in places, and 5-10 cm in others, particularly over higher ground.

The Met Office is warning of the risk for slippery spots on roads and untreated surfaces, as well as delayed travel by bus and rail services. It also issued a new warning for more snow on Wednesday and Thursday.

Snowy conditions closed the A44 in both directions early on Monday morning between Llangurig and Aberystwyth. A snow plough was sent to clear the roadway, Traffic Wales said. Traffic cameras also revealed wintry conditions on the highest point of the A465 and at Ebbw Vale.

More wintry weather may be on the way as the day progresses.

BBC Meteorologist Derek Brockway has warned that the radar shows rain and some snow, as well as signs of a Pembrokeshire Dangler forming.

Writing on Twitter, he said: "Radar shows rain and some snow this morning, plus signs of a Pembrokshire Dangler forming."

A Pembrokeshire Dangler is a phenomenon that occurs most often in the autumn and winter as a narrow band of showers sits over the Irish Sea. As cold arctic air blows over the warmer water, it can cause long spells of rain, snow or hail to form, and 'dangle' over a narrow zone.

According to the Met Office, showers, which can turn wintry at times, are forecast to continue on the western coast into the evening. Widespread frost and icy patches are likely.

The potential for sporadic wintry showers will continue to close out the week and kick off the new year.
