Photojournalism paints a bigger picture at Visa pour l'Image festival

ENCORE! © FRANCE 24

The front page may have gone digital these days, but photography has lost none of its power in telling the larger story when it comes to headline news. The Visa pour l'Image festival in Perpignan celebrates the very best of international photojournalism and, in doing so, shines a light on the human struggles and environmental challenges of our time.

Nariman El-Mofty joins us from Cairo to talk about her work documenting the exodus at Ethiopia's borders in "Fleeing the Tigray". The Egyptian-Canadian photographer recounts the difficulties of accessing the conflict zone and how a virtual news blackout in Ethiopia attempted to cover up the atrocities that many have called ethnic cleansing.

And we get a look at the innovative use of text and image in New York Times photographer Tyler Hicks's coverage of the Covid-19 pandemic in the Amazon, which has won the Visa pour l'Image Award for the Best Digital News Story.
