Photography exhibition to celebrate Albion Rovers centenary year

An Albion Rovers fan is giving an in-depth look at life at the football club to mark 100 years at the heart of Coatbridge.

Iain McLean and Summerlee Museum are celebrating Rovers’ centenary at Cliftonhill Stadium until October 27 with a unique photography exhibition.

Iain has shared a snippet of his “ongoing social documentary project” about the fans and environment of the Coatbridge side.

Through his work, Iain says he trying to give a look at the “subculture of lower league Scottish football” and “its precarious place within the greater football machine”.

The exhibition is broken down into four main categories; “Architecture and Environment” looks at the buildings and physical structures in and around Cliftonhill; “Away” follows the League Two club and fans during their adventures on the road; “Behind the Scenes” details and profiles the work of the volunteers within the stadium; and “Fans’ Snaps” looks at supporters inside and around the grounds.

Iain told the Advertiser: “The subject could easily have been other marginalised topics – greyhound racing, bingo, speedway – but I was immediately attracted to the warmth and sense of community within the fans and volunteers at Cliftonhill Stadium.

“Conceived in the year 2000, this project has run, off and on, since then, with the last five years in particular providing an abundance of good photographic opportunities at both home and away grounds.

“I have a large quantity of exhibition quality images and recently produced a selection for my current exhibition at Summerlee.

“The images aim to show the warmth of those involved. I want them to be an antidote to the corporate commercialisation of life – and to raise a smile.”
