Photographer red-faced after accidentally calling Queen inappropriate pet name

For most of us, the prospect of meeting the Queen would be an honour and a privilege, and the chances are you'd be pretty nervous, and want to be on your best behaviour.

One photographer has recalled the one time he was working with the Queen, and wanted to make her feel at ease - like he does with all his clients - by telling a few jokes.

David Bailey was working with Her Majesty back in 2014, and just like with every other job, he wanted to help her feel as comfortable as possible.

So, the famous snapper began reeling off a few jokes, namely about the impressive jewellery she was wearing at the time, but as he slipped into photographer-cum-comedian mode, David accidentally forgot who he was talking to - just for a second.

Speaking to The Telegraph, David explained that mid-joke, he accidentally ended up calling the Queen by a slightly inappropriate pet name, when he referred to her as "girl."

The photographer was making light of the incredibly expensive jewels she was wearing, and jokingly asking her if they were real, when the mishap took place.

David recalled: "I said: 'I bet that cost a few bob, girl'. It just came out. I call everyone 'girl'."

Royal protocol means that members of the public should first address the Queen as 'Your Majesty,' before going on to say 'Ma'am.' There certainly doesn't seem to be any reference to 'girl' in the royal handbook.

However, it sounds like the Queen was as gracious as ever, with an unphased David going on to say, "We had a laugh. Beautiful skin, the Queen."
