Photo shows Leitrim GAA fans 'spotted' in pub with Copper Face Jacks' iconic sign that 'went missing' over the weekend in Dublin

Leitrim fans and footballers were unsuccessful in their quest for Division 4 glory on Saturday but it looked like they brought home an iconic piece of memorabilia from Dublin with them.

The lads were 'spotted' with Copper Face Jacks' iconic black and gold sign - which has supposedly been missing since the weekend - in a pub.

A Snapchat photo, which has been circulating heavily online, shows a group of Leitrim fans appearing to hold up the sign with a county flag in the background.

The caption on the photo reads: "We mightn't have brought home the Division 4 cup but maybe we got something even more prestigious from the weekend?"

However, it has since transpired that the crafty jesters from the west were simply putting their photoshop skills to good use - and Coppers have since confirmed to Dublin Live that the real sign never went missing at all.

The famous Dublin nightclub had appealed for the return of the sign after it appeared to have been removed overnight.

The sign had hung outside the building for many years but the popular haunt shared images on social media on Monday afternoon that showed it had been removed.

The busy watering hole even sent out an appeal to gardai on Monday asking for their assistance.

They said: "Hi An Garda Siochana , would you be able to help us? We seem to be missing something.

"Our iconic Coppers sign is missing/stolen. Any help appreciated."

But, a spokesman for the famous nightclub has confirmed that the missing sign appeal was in fact a prank.

He said: "I’m afraid those sharing the picture have fallen victim to our April Fools gag.

"I would have posted an update the following day, but the guys on Fully Charged with Spin1038 bet me to it."

As for the Leitrim lads and their photo, the fun-loving football fans were just playing along with the elaborate April Fool's Day hoax.

And what a joke it was for the county, with the photo going viral within hours!

The Wild Rose County had a flying run in their National League football campaign.

The boys in the green and gold won six of their seven games in Division 4 but just fell short in the final against Derry, losing on a score line of 0-20 to 0-16.

Coppers and adjoining Jackson Court Hotel were put up for sale by owner Cathal Jackson last month.

The venue, which first opened in 1996, is reportedly expected to sell for up to €40 million.

Mr Jackson is selling the business as he has decided to retire.

Speaking about the decision to sell up, he said: "Over the past 23 years I have been totally committed to setting up and establishing Copper Face Jacks as one of the most enduring and successful entertainment venues in Ireland.

"It is now time to hand over the reins to new owners who have the energy and the expertise to take Coppers to the next level and to continue to deliver the 'best night out in Dublin' to all our great and loyal customers."
