Photo shows 'ghost town' Princes Street at rush hour - despite shops reopening

Princes Street was pictured looking eerily quiet during rush hour yesterday, despite the reopening of non-essential shops across the city centre.

The main shopping street in the capital was photographed by a passer by at 5.45pm, a time that would usually see the road packed with people heading home from work or partaking in a little retail therapy.

The city centre has been much less populated throughout lockdown, however it was expected that the reopening of stores such as Primark, Zara and Topshop would see a busier peak time.

A local photographer, who took the picture, wrote on Twitter: "This, taken at 5.45pm, shows by the lack of people that there is still a lot of caution."

Earlier in the day, Edinburgh Live headed down to the shops to have a first look at the new social distancing measures and speak to some of the first customers desperate to make some post lockdown purchases.

Large queues were spotted outside Zara and Primark, however these had died down by later on in the day.

This week the First Minister asked the public to be wary when shopping and abide by all the new rules enforced for staff and customer safety.

In a tweet, she said:

"If you plan on visiting shops today, please do so responsibly. Maintain physical distancing, follow hygiene advice, wear a face covering and respect staff who may be asking you to shop differently. We’ve made so much progress against the virus - let’s not squander it."

Scotland has now seen four consecutive days with no recorded coronavirus deaths, a new record since the pandemic began.
