After speaking to the man’s friends and sending a PhoneFind message, officers headed to the scene.

The technology allows rescue teams to locate lost walkers or casualties.

Crews arrived at the same time as paramedics who arrived by air ambulance.

After finding the man, he was assessed and taken to hospital.

In a post, Oldham Mountain Rescue Team said: “On Sunday afternoon, we received a request from North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, who had reports of a male who'd fallen down a steep slope and injured himself, somewhere in the Dovestones area.

“After speaking to the casualty's friends and sending a PhoneFind message, we soon had the location established and were heading to the scene.

“Arriving at the same time as the North West Air Ambulance (NWAA) were landing some distance down from the cas site, we picked up their paramedics and were with the male shortly afterwards.

“He was assessed by the NWAA paramedics and our team medics before being packaged in our vacuum mattress and stretcher. He was then transported down the track in Oldham Mobile 3 and transferred over to the NWAS land ambulance for onward transport to hospital.

“The casualty was part of a large walking group, who were also escorted down to their cars so they could continue their journey home.

“17 OMRT personnel were involved for 1 hour and 17 minutes.”
