Phone captures moment armed robbers make dramatic getaway from Leeds city centre jewellers

The video above shows the moment a group of armed suspects in balaclavas fled from the scene of a violent robbery in Leeds city centre this morning.

Four or five individuals - some of which were said to have been carrying axes and crowbars - are seen running to a hatchback with bags crammed full of items stolen from Philip Stoner The Jewellers in County Arcade.

The dramatic getaway was captured by this phone footage on Vicar Lane at around 10.30am today (Wednesday).

West Yorkshire Police have said the armed robbery was "planned and organised", although no one is believed to have been injured in the incident.

Detective Inspector Guy Shackleton, of Leeds District CID, said: "Our enquiries into this incident are currently at a very early stage and we would like to hear from anyone who witnessed any part of it.

"This appears to have been a planned and organised offence and we will be carrying out extensive enquiries to identify those involved.

"There are no reports of anyone being physically injured but this will have clearly been a distressing incident for the shop staff involved and for those who were nearby.

"I would urge anyone who has any information that could assist our investigation to contact us immediately."
