Phoenix Park's huge future changes as plans to overhaul iconic gem gets support

Plans to overhaul the current layout of the Phoenix Park from a rat run for drivers to the city centre into a space for pedestrians and cyclists have the majority of support in a report of the public consultation taken earlier this year.

The report follows a public consultation on a draft plan which demonstrated a number of design changes which look set to be introduced over the coming months and years that will benefit sustainable modes of transport.

So, what are the design changes that are set to be implemented?

Chesterfield Avenue layout

Parking will be banned all along Chesterfield avenue as it is today with improved cycling lanes being laid down instead.

For the first time in history, pedestrian crossings will be added to Chesterfield Avenue with work set to commence in the final quarter of 2021.

A 30kph speed limit will also be put in place throughout the park instead of a mixture of 30kph and 50kph, depending on the road drivers were on.

Cycling improvements

The original plan to lay 14 kilometres of new high-quality cycling track is set to go ahead as well. Upgrades and relaying of existing routes as well as improving cyclist entrances into the park.

New bus service

Over 80% of respondents to the consultation wanted more sustainable modes of transport to the park. A bus service will be added to the park starting in the first quarter of 2022. It will link Phoenix Park to both Heuston station and Broombridge.

Upper Glen Road

The Upper Glen Road which runs along the side of the park to Chapelizod gate is to be made into a cul de sac for an initial nine-month trial starting at the end of this year.

Cabra Gate

Those who used to drive in through Cabra gate will now have to find a new entrance as it's set to be a bus-only gate for the new park bus service along with cyclists and pedestrians.
