Phoenix Park COVID concert in doubt as tickets need to cost hundreds to cover promoter bill

The Phoenix Park’s Covid concert is in doubt over the need to price tickets at €200 a head per ticket to cover promotion costs.

This means the plans to hold the pilot concert with 3,500 music fans at the end of the month are in jeopardy over a concert promotion invoice.

Dublin Live has learned of an issue between Minister Catherine Martin’s Department of Culture and event promoters.

It centres around the bill allegedly presented by the promoters, which Dublin Live understands is for €670,000.

There will only be 3,500 tickets sold, which puts the average cost at just under €200 per ticket to put on the show.

Our source in the industry said: “It looks like the concert is off after the row.

“They (Department of Culture officials) didn’t take it too well with the bill they were presented with.

“You’d get U2 and Coldplay together at your wedding for that price.

“The Irish music industry is very small and they’re unlikely to be able to get anyone else to do it.

“The promoters have all the cards, the bands, the set-up, so they’ll have to go back to them if they want this concert to go ahead.”

However, the Department of Culture is adamant the concert will still go ahead, despite the cost and the fact that they cannot confirm who will play.

And in the comment from the department’s spokesman below the specific date first announced, June 26, is not now mentioned.

A spokesman for the department said: “The Phoenix Park event will proceed as announced by the Minister on Friday 28th of May.

“Discussions are ongoing in relation to the event which will be run in conjunction with the OPW as venue manager.”
