Phoenix Mapham's mother pleads not guilty to kidnapping son

The mother of six-year-old Canberra boy Phoenix Mapham, who was allegedly kidnapped from his school last month, has pleaded not guilty to charges related to the incident, which sparked the ACT's first ever Amber alert.

After more than a week of searching police alleged they found Tessa Woodcock, 36, in bushland with the boy, with only blankets and a small fire for warmth.

On Tuesday Ms Woodcock faced the ACT Magistrates Court where she entered pleas of not guilty to two charges, including kidnapping.

She did not apply for bail during the hearing.

Outside court, her lawyer Adrian McKenna said she had the right to have her case dealt with fairly.

"Ms Woodcock has today pleaded not guilty to what, it has to be said, are two very serious charges," he said.

"However she, like any other person has every right to have the brief of evidence … carefully scrutinised.

"In terms of bail we will wait until the time's right and the circumstances are right to consider her options for bail."

Phoenix Mapham was reunited with his father after the pair was found.

Ms Woodcock will be back in court in October.
