Phoebe Waller-Bridge thanks Barack Obama in hilarious Golden Globes acceptance speech

Phoebe Waller-Bridge paid a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Barack Obama as Fleabag was named Best TV Comedy at the Golden Globes 2020.

The former President of the United States name-checked the second series of Waller-Bridge's dark comedy in his annual round up of his favourite TV shows and films in December.

Some fans then noted that footage of Obama features in an explicit scene in the first season of the BBC show.

Referring to the President's list of recommendations as she received the award, Waller-Bridge said: "Personally, I would like to also thank Obama for putting us on his list.

"As some of you may know, he's always been on mine. And if you don’t get that, please watch season one of Fleabag really, really quickly.”

Waller-Bridge accepted the award along with the show's cast and crew, and told the audience: "A huge thank you to everyone for supporting us so much. It’s all a bit gross but we all became best friends, which is ironic, because the show is about such a lonely lady.”

Earlier in the evening, she picked up the award for Best Actress in a TV Series (Musical or Comedy) for the show and paid tribute to her co-star Andrew Scott, who caused a stir with his role as the so-called "hot priest" when the show aired last spring.

“This really comes down to Andrew Scott,” she said. “There was a lot of talk about the chemistry of us in the show but he could have chemistry with a pebble.

“I loved being Andrew’s pebble in this. Thank you so much for bringing so much fire to this season.”

Waller-Bridge also posed for photos on the red carpet with her on-screen sister Sian Clifford, while co-star Olivia Colman (who plays Fleabag's new step-mother) was also in attendance at the ceremony.
