Phoebe Waller-Bridge has revealed there was an “alternative ending” to Fleabag series two, but vowed she would “never say” what it was.
The hit BBC show ended with Waller-Bridge’s eponymous character being turned down by Andrew Scott’s priest, who admits he has chosen God over her.
But the writer and actor has now said it all could have ended very differently.
When asked by screenwriter Jack Thorne in The Guardian if she ever considered an ending in which the “Hot Priest” said yes, Waller-Bridge replied: “May I clarify that I never scripted him as Hot Priest! That was the good work of the internet meeting Andrew Scott’s impossibly intense charisma. There was an idea for an alternative ending, but I’ll never say what it was…”
She did, however, share details about one of the show’s many scenes that were written but never made it onto the screen.
“I have discarded full episodes of Fleabag that have nothing to do with the series now,” said Waller Bridge. “There’s an episode somewhere where Fleabag goes to ‘Grief Tango’ at the local church hall, which I’m slightly bereft about.”
The Bafta-winner also said she wrote the acclaimed first episode of season two in less than 60 minutes. “Once I’d decided to set it in the restaurant,” she said, “I wrote the whole thing in under an hour… WTF.”
