Phoebe Waller-Bridge confirms Fleabag's return and explains title meaning

On This Morning today, Phoebe Waller-Bridge confirmed the return of her beloved comedy Fleabag - and all for a touching reason.

The BBC show began as a one-woman show, written and performed by Phoebe.

The 34-year-old star is streaming the original show online, showing a recording of her performance at the London's Soho Theatre.

And proceeds from the event will be donated to people affected by the coronavirus.

“It’s a one-woman show in partnership with the National Theatre and Soho Theatre and we are raising money for coronavirus victims, and 30% will go back into the theatre community,” she explained to hosts Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford.

“It’s incredible, I was talking to some friends when all shows were shut down and companies suddenly lost all their income and prospects," she added.

“This was a scary moment for people like me and friend and incredible to have something like this in our back pocket."

She added: "I had honestly thought Fleabag was done. I’d put Fleabag to sleep, she’s gone now and somehow she snuck back in."

Eamonn also asked Phoebe what the definition of of a fleabag, but she found it hard to articulate.

"Do you know what? I struggle to describe what a fleabag is," she replied.

"Fleabag and Flea was my nickname growing up from my family, so I try and hold onto the positive connotations.

"A fleabag motel is rough around the edges and a bit of a mess.

"I wanted to call her that, I wanted her persona and outside aesthetic to show that she’s in control of her life when in reality she’s not."

Ruth quipped: "And that's why we loved her!"

* Fleabag the play can be found on the Soho Theatre website and on Amazon Prime for a minimum of £4.
