Phoebe Waller-Bridge among BAFTA winners celebrated with a portrait by Lincoln Townley

Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge is one of a series of stars whose BAFTA triumph has been celebrated with a portrait by artist Lincoln Townley.

The painter, who has previously made portraits of figures including Samuel L. Jackson and Cate Blanchett, was commissioned by BAFTA to celebrate the talent being honoured at its Britannia awards in Los Angeles.

As well as Waller-Bridge, who is being named British Artist of the Year, other works in the series include Jane Fonda, Jackie Chan and Steve Coogan who are all being recognised at tomorrow’s event.

The paintings will be sold on the night and Townley said all the money raised will be given to help fund BAFTA’s charity work.

He said the paintings were “about capturing the power and perseverance of these people”.

Chantal Rickards, CEO of BAFTA Los Angeles, said: “We are delighted that Lincoln Townley has returned to create his extraordinarily unique portraits for this year’s Britannia Awards nominees, and are endlessly grateful to him for donating the proceeds to support BAFTA Los Angeles’ educational and philanthropic programs. Townley’s creations are perfect embodiments of the individuals they depict — stunning, compelling and bold.”

Two years ago, Townley sold a diamond encrusted portrait of Princess Diana for a record-breaking £1 million. The two metre square oil and acrylic spray on linen had more than £100,000 worth of diamonds embedded into the canvas.
