Phoebe Bridgers announces news of her father’s death: ‘Rest in peace dad’

Phoebe Bridgers announced her father’s death in an Instagram post on Tuesday.

The LA singer shared an image of her and her father from yesteryear with the caption, “Rest in peace dad”.

In the photo, a young Bridgers sported short pink hair while sharing a pair of headphones with her father.

The I Know The End hitmaker, whose parents divorced when she was 20, did not share information regarding the cause of his passing.

The artist has previously spoken about her complicated relationship with her father, notably during a 2019 interview with GQ.

The outlet wrote: “Dad was a scenic carpenter who, she says, was abusive and had a ‘drug thing,’ and Bridgers didn’t have her first drink until she was 19.”

“I wasn’t square necessarily,” she told the publication. “It just scared the shit out of me. I was like, I don’t want to lose control.”

A year later, the Motion Sickness singer revealed that she had started talking to her estranged father again during the pandemic, telling The Line Of Best Fit: “It’s strange, but it’s been really nice.”

Bridgers also references her relationship with her father in her song Kyoto citing a time he was “getting sober”.

The lyrics read: “You called me from a payphone / They still got payphones / It cost a dollar a minute / To tell me you’re getting sober / And you wrote me a letter / But I don’t have to read it.”

The song continues: “I don’t forgive you/ But please don’t hold me to it/ Born under Scorpio skies/ I wanted to see the world/ Through your eyes until it happened.”

News of her father’s passing comes amid ongoing speculation that she and Irish actor Paul Mescal have split.

Bridgers and the Aftersun actor sparked engagement rumours in April when it was reported by The Sun that the 28-year-old singer had referred to Mescal as her “fiancé” at Coachella.

However, the hitmaker has sparked speculation she’s dating comedian Bo Burnham after thet were spotted “cuddling” at several locations in Los Angeles in recent weeks, according to Deux U podcast.

The singer and Burnham, who have been friends since 2021, furthered romance rumours when they attended Kate Berlant’s one-woman comedy show in New York late last month, according to Jezebel.
