Philly McMahon announces retirement from inter-county football

Philly McMahon has officially announced his retirement from inter-county football.

The Ballymun Kickhams man has officially brought the curtain down on a glittering inter-county career with eight All-Ireland medals, 12 Leinster medals, five league medals, and two All-Stars in his back pocket.

McMahon is one of seven Dubs who have collected eight All-Ireland medals alongside Stephen Cluxton, Michael Darragh Macauley, James McCarthy, Kevin McManamon, Cian O’Sullivan and Michael Fitzsimons.

The 34-year-old confirmed the news with an emotional statement this morning, featuring an excerpt from the poem Dublin, You Are by Stephen James Smith.

His statement simply read: "Dublin. My friend. My home. Mentioned 50 times in this poem.

"We live in you, My city, mo chroi, I love you, most of the time, you see.... Dublin you are, me. - Stephen James Smith.

"Thank you to everyone that was apart of my journey. It's time to pass the jersey on."
