Phillip Schofield tipped to join Strictly Come Dancing's first same-sex couple

Phillip Schofield has been tipped to make history on Strictly Come Dancing by competing in the first same sex couple on the show.

The This Morning host has been given the seal of approval by professional dancer AJ Pritchard, who says Phil has some great moves in his locker.

AJ, 25, quit the BBC One dance show last year but has been speaking about who he'd like to see strut their stuff on the new series.

"I think Phillip Schofield would be great on Strictly," AJ told The Sun.

"He got up on This Morning once with Holly and did a bit of a boogie and he can dance, and he is entertaining, and he is such a nice guy.

"To see him learn and put him under a bit of pressure would always be funny, I’m sure."

Phil, 58, came out as gay in February this year and fans of Strictly have been urging bosses to consider same sex pairings in their partnerships this year.

"It would be great if Phil was part of the first same sex couple on Strictly - I would love to see that," said AJ.

Despite AJ's enthusiasm, he revealed that some of the Strictly professionals don't want to break from 'tradition' and dance with a partner of the same sex.

"I know certain pro dancers would like to dance with a woman because that is what tradition is, and it kind of makes sense but it is very much down to someone’s personal opinion of what Ballroom and Latin dancing actually is," he explained.

ITV show Dancing On Ice became the first prime time talent show to feature a same sex couple - Ian Watkins, better known as H from Steps, and pro skater Matt Evers.

Strictly's Johannes Radebe has been rumoured to make history on Strictly by becoming the first male professional to dance with someone of the same sex this year.
