Phillip Schofield 'screaming and kicking off' seconds before going on air on This Morning

Phillip Schofield admitted that he was "kicking off" just seconds before going on air today after fretting over the fact he couldn't see.

Appearing on This Morning with co-host Holly Willoughby, he addressed his loss of vision at the start of the programme.

Introducing the show, Phil laughed: "I'm just kicking off, I'm kicking off. Everything's going wrong."

"You say kicking off but if you heard five seconds ago Phil was actually screaming," Holly supplied.

She asked what the matter was and he explained: "If you've followed this show for a long time you will know that years ago I had my eyes lasered and they have been incredible."

"Amazing," Holly quipped.

"Life-changing," Phil agreed. "But since Christmas - and I have one long-distance eye and one reading eye, it's really clever because your brain get used to it.

"But since Christmas, my reading eye has been slipping and slipping."

As he tried to explain what his vision looked like, the camera showed a blurry shot of him and he exclaimed: "That's what I'm seeing!

"And I just said to Holly, 'I want to have them lasered again but the laser place isn't open!'"

Holly suggested that he just put glasses on, but Phil insisted that he couldn't.

"Glasses are nice," she said.

"I can't do it, I just don't want to," he whined. "Which is why I'm sitting further and further away [from my script]."

Phil explained that he didn't have an issue with reading from the monitors, just his script.

"Oh don't worry, I don't look at it anyway," Holly quipped as they both laughed.

*This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV
