Phillip Schofield's wife Stephanie Lowe vows to support him as she speaks out for first time since he came out

Phillip Schofield's wife has pledged to support her husband after he revealed that he is gay, stating that she will "still be there, holding his hand".

The TV presenter and This Morning host made the announcement on Friday (February 7) via social media, before speaking about it during an emotional live chat with co-star Holly Willoughby.

And now Stephanie - who has been married to Phillip for almost 27 years - has spoken for the first time since Friday, describing her husband's announcement as a "brave step".

Talking to The Sun, she said: "I love Phillip, as much today as I ever have, and always will.

"At the same time, we've been awestruck by the strength and love of our precious girls, even as they've been trying to make sense of it all for themselves.

"Our family has also been so supportive and will help us going forward."

She continued: "Although this is difficult for us all, I support Phillip in this taking this brave step and I will still be there, holding his hand.

"Everyone should be proud to live their own truth."

Earlier, Schofield told The Sun On Sunday that his wife had known he was gay "for a while" and said she was "the kindest, sweetest soul I could have possibly met".

The 57-year-old, who has two daughters with his wife - Molly, 26, and Ruby, 23 - revealed that he did not know if his marriage would last.

Holly read out a statement from Phillip on-air during Friday's episode of This Morning, which is usually hosted at the end of each week by Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford.

Reading out Phillip's statement on the show, Holly, 38, said: "My inner conflict contrasts with an outside world that has changed so very much for the better.

"Today, quite rightly, being gay is a reason to celebrate and be proud.

"Yes, I am feeling pain and confusion, but that comes only from the hurt that I am causing to my family."

The statement also revealed Phillip's many years of struggling with being gay, which at times included some "very dark moments".

Hundreds of thousands of people took to social media to support Phillip's announcement, with fans and fellow celebrities praising him for being courageous enough to speak out.
