Phillip Schofield on what prompted him to come out as gay after 27 years of marriage

Phillip Schofield has opened up about what prompted him to come out as gay after 27 years of marriage.

The This Morning presenter opened up his heart on Friday for a candid chat on the sofa with his ITV colleague and pal Holly Willoughby after posting a statement on Instagram addressing his sexuality.

Emotional Phil spoke of his love for his family, including his wife Stephanie Lowe and daughters Ruby and Molly, as he explained how supportive they have been through it.

He also revealed the moment he told his mum Pat and her sweet response to his news.

Since then Phil has spoken more about why now was the right time.

Speaking to The Sun, he said: “Make no mistake, I did this for me.

“But I also hope it might make others feel they can do the same.

“I guarantee right now there are actors, sportsmen and other high-profile people experiencing the same thing.

“Everyone from bankers to bakers, all sorts. I know there are some people who will never come out. But I hope maybe some might feel more able to after this.”

Since speaking to Holly, Phil has hinted a little more about the reason that prompted him to come out now.

He said: “I remember we had a phone-in, quite a long time ago, with a lady who called in who was 94 years old and said she had wanted to come out her whole life. And eventually she did.

“She had waited all those years and it made me realise - life is short. I wanted to do it and in the right way.”

The reaction to Schofe’s news has been largely supportive, but he admitted that he understands his news will bring “pain and confusion”.

He said: “It is always going to come with a certain amount of hurt and pain and confusion.”

He added: “I could not have a more supportive family around me who have showered me with love when I really needed it.”

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
