Phillip Schofield heartbroken as pensioner who sang to This Morning viewers in lockdown dies after contracting coronavirus

A pensioner who entertained This Morning viewers by singing and dancing amid the coronavirus lockdown has died after contracting the deadly bug.

The man, called John, won the nation's hearts after performing a rendition of Penny Arcade by Roy Orbison from his care home.

Elderly people at his home made placards with messages to their loved ones on Mother's Day, and one of the carers revealed John had made a rather rude one about coronavirus.

He held a more family friendly 'do one coronavirus' sign for This Morning as the show went live to Dearnlea Park Residential Care Home in Rotherham.

Presenter Phillip, from Oldham, said he was 'heartbroken' to hear that John had died in announcement on behalf of John's family.

"It’s with great sadness that John from Dearnlea Nursing Home has sadly passed away after testing positive for Covid-19. Please join our village in playing the song he sang on This Morning Penny Arcade at 7pm on Saturday," Phillip was told.

The TV host replied: "This is heartbreaking. Holly and I have a week off next week. We will pay John a proper tribute when we are back. Our love to all his family and friends."

Phillip was also told: "His family wanted to say thank you for making his dreams come true to sing on TV."

John showed viewers what a character he was by serenading them.

As Phillip and Holly cut away he continued singing the chorus and dancing in front of his fellow residents.
