Phillip Schofield forced to step in to explain Holly Willoughby's absence on This Morning

Holly Willoughby wasn't on This Morning on Bank Holiday Monday, with viewers quick to notice she was missing from the latest episode of the ITV daytime show.

Her co-host Phillip Schofield instead opened the show with Rochelle Humes, who stood in for her, reports the Mirror.

And he was keen to explain why his pal was absent from the show - with it being Bank Holiday Monday.

Holly rarely hosts This Morning on bank holidays, or any school holiday, and Phillip usually misses them, too.

The pair are usually replaced by Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes, or Alison Hammond, or Rochelle.

Holly has taken the day off to be with her children.

It could be that Phillip chose to come into the studio due to it being Line of Duty themed after last night's series six finale.

Meanwhile, he joked with Rochelle that she'd chosen to ditch her own children to replace Holly, as the pair burst into laughter.

Rochelle admitted that Holly was "a better mum than her", as she shared her own excitement to be back on the This Morning sofa.

Phillip said: "We should say also it's Bank Holiday, so Holly is with the kids today, Rochelle's in today."

Rochelle replied: "I know, I dunno about Holly she's a better mum than I am. You're telling me there's no more school again? No Phil, I'm coming to work."

Many fans had questioned on Twitter where Holly was, but others were quick to realise it was usual for her to take Bank Holidays off.

This Morning airs on ITV every Monday to Friday at 10am.
