Phillip Schofield rumbles Gino D'Acampo's This Morning 'lie' about Italian family recipe

Gino D'Acampo was left mortified on Tuesday's This Morning when host Phillip Schofield exposed him as 'a liar' in front of millions of viewers.

The show's resident chef and new host of Family Fortunes joined Phillip and co-presenter Holly Willoughby in the ITV studio to make tagliatelle and, before his cooking segment reacted to an item of Brits' favourite forgotten foods, reacting in disgust to pizza flavoured crisps and tinned burgers.

But then Gino was left with some explaining to do after being caught out on a lie he told about a recipe.

Teasing what was coming up with, the former I'm A Celebrity contestant said: "Now is the time for porcini mushrooms.

"I'm not going to do it with a fresh one, but I'm going to do it with a dry one."

Holly interjected to quip: "It's always time for the porcini mushrooms with you!"

Undeterred, Gino replied: "In this case yes...did you have to say that?!

"The thing is, if you pick them now they could be dangerous if you don't know what you're picking in the forest, so I'm giving you an alternative."

A seemingly inquisitive Phillip asked him: "Which member of the family passed this down to you?"

Gino explained: "My great auntie. I remember my Great Auntie Sophia used to pick up the porcini mushrooms every autumn, finely slice them and then sun dry them."

Turning sceptical, Phillip quizzed: "Did she? That is a lovely story considering that this morning, when I looked at our briefing notes, Gino said it was his grandfather who passed this one down."

A flustered Gino hit back: "I always get confused," to which Holly old him: "When you lie you do get confused!"

The chef replied: "I don't lie. These are details that you don't need," before Holly joked: "Stick with just like mama used to make!"

One viewer reacted: "You know Gino's stories are a bit iffy when he talks about his 7 grandmothers' recipes," and another tweeted: "Gino tells bad lies."

When it came to actually cooking the tagliatelle an hour later, Gino then said it was auntie Sally rather than Sophia before reaffirming it was his grandfather's recipe.

Phillip told him: "If you're going to lie, do it consistently!"
