Phillip Schofield clashes with Nicola Thorp as she suggests all men enable abuse

Phillip Schofield clashed with Nicola Thorp after she suggested that all men have at one point passed up an opportunity to call out abuse on women.

Appearing on This Morning, the former Coronation Street star discussed the recent vigil held in honour of Sarah Everard.

The 33-year-old went missing while walking home across Clapham Common and was later found dead in a woodland in Kent.

And Nicola now says that "it's not about violence against women, it's about male violence against women" and she spoke to hosts Phil and Holly Willoughby about the fear women are forced to live with.

"That's what we need to focus on because for decades women have been doing all sorts of ridiculous things to try and keep ourselves safe," Nicola said.

"Has sending a text to your friend at the end of the night to let her know that you got home, how is that to keep you safe? That is only informing a friend you have disappeared.

"I've been overwhelmed this weekend by wonderful male friends and men on Twitter who have spoken out and said 'we're part of the problem'. They've said, 'I don't harass women but I have stood by and allowed it to happen'."

"So yes, not all men are abusers but all men at some point in their life have passed up an opportunity to call out abuse," she added.

It was then when Phil spoke up and challenged Nicola, saying that he has never passed up an opportunity to put an end to abuse against women.

"You don't think so?" Nicola asked Phil, to which he said: "No, not to my knowledge."

"Oh well there we go then, you're one of the not all men," the soap star said.

Phil went on: "I suspect there is a great number of many men who haven't. I'm hearing in the gallery now a number of men who are saying no that hasn't happened to me."

Nicola was not buying it, telling Phil she simply does not believe that's the case.

"Well I find that very difficult to believe, because I as a woman have even been in a situation where I've seen someone being harassed," she added.

Viewers rushed to Twitter to share their thoughts on Nicola's stance, as many slammed the former soap star for generalising all men.

Nicola's comment was met with criticism from Phil (ITV)

"Well done @Schofe Nicola Thorp - please don’t speak for me and don’t speak for “all men” Totally right that he called her out on that. #ThisMorning," one viewer wrote.

Another penned: "Nicola Thorp saying EVERY man has harassed a woman and EVERY woman isn’t safe in her own home. Is she for real or after an award? #ThisMorning."

While a third added: "Nicola thorp is 1 million percent wrong, my husband, sons and brothers would die before they’d let a woman suffer abuse - not all men are monsters #thismorning."

*This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV
