Phillip Schofield called Holly to ask 'what's going to happen' before coming out on TV

Phillip Schofield revealed he called co-star Holly Willoughby to ask her 'what is going to happen' before he came out as gay on live television.

The This Morning presenter revealed his sexuality on his social media in February 2020. Holly also posted in support of him.

Minutes later, he and Holly made an emotional joint appearance on their day off on This Morning, surrounded by Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford.

It was an emotional journey for Phillip, and two years later, he's able to openly discuss his sexuality with his supportive co-workers and fans.

During Monday morning's talk show, Dame Kelly Holmes appeared on the show to discuss coming out and said she had to make a phone call to ask someone what would happen if she came out.

"That one phone call changed everything for me," she said.

Phillip quietly turned to Holly and said: "That's the conversation I had with you... 'What's going to happen?'"

Holly added to the conversation and explained: "This is a conversation that is probably happening in households up and down the country and world and, actually, having both of you having done it and been terrified to do it...

"Look at where you are now and look at where you are now [pointing to Phillip and Kelly]."

She continued: "It is possible and I know you just said yourself that 'I've never been happy' and I hope that you look forward to that happiness now and see it as a real tangible thing."

Dame Kelly came out as gay over the weekend and said it was important for her to come out during Pride Month.

She admitted to Sunday Mirror: "There have been lots of dark times where I wished I could scream that I am gay – but I couldn’t.”

Kelly revealed: "I needed to do this now, for me. It was my decision. I’m nervous about saying it. I feel like I’m going to explode with excitement.

"Sometimes I cry with relief. The moment this comes out, I’m essentially getting rid of that fear."

And explaining her fear of retrospective action for breaching Forces rules, she says: “I was convinced throughout my whole life that if I admitted to being gay in the Army I’d still be in trouble.”

Family and close friends have known for years that Kelly is gay.
