Phillip Schofield brought Dancing On Ice rehearsals to a standstill to give emotional speech about coming out as gay

Phillip Schofield brought Dancing On Ice rehearsals to a standstill to give an emotional speech to colleagues about coming out as gay, it has been revealed.

According to Dancing On Ice skater Matt Evers, Schofield stopped production behind the scenes during rehearsals to make the announcement.

The 57-year-old presenter and TV star was then embraced by Evers and four other celebrities in a heart-warming moment, the Mirror Online reports.

Schofield opened up about his sexuality to friend and co-presenter Holly Willoughby on Friday's edition of This Morning after posting a touching statement on Instagram.

"With the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, I have been coming to terms with the fact that I am gay," Phil said on Instagram.

Discussing the moment Schofield came out as gay during Dancing On Ice rehearsals, Evers told Heart.co.uk: "It was a really nice atmosphere in the studio. I think at one point in rehearsals he kind of stopped production and said, 'OK I just need to say this, I don't want to be the elephant in the room any more, if you want to give me a hug, give me a hug'.

"He was very sensitive to viewers at home as well and he kinda wanted to get that out in dress rehearsal before we were live and it was a really nice moment.

"Holly teared up and there was about five or six of us that were stood around him."

Dancing On Ice continues at 6pm on ITV1 this weekend.
