Wideout Phillip Dorsett found himself in an unhappy situation at the end of the 2019 NFL season. Yet again, he plummeted down the depth chart due to the arrival of new talent. During Dorsett’s stint in New England, it was far too common of an occurrence. The Patriots would give him a shot at a starting role before finding a way to upgrade the receiver position.
Dorsett’s snap count fell at the end of 2019 when Mohamed Sanu joined the team in a trade and N’Keal Harry returned from injured reserve. Dorsett was reduced to a backup role, logging two catches in his final five games with the team (including the postseason). When he hit free agency this offseason, the receiver got an offer from the Seattle Seahawks, and decided it was time to make the move. He’d passed on the Seahawks last offseason in favor of returning to the Patriots on a one-year deal. Not again.
“I didn’t want to make that mistake again,” Dorsett said on Tuesday via Zoom call with local reporters. “I feel like this is the right offense for me. Obviously I know Russell (Wilson), and he’s a great quarterback. The way he plays quarterback and the way this offense is fits my skill set.”
Dorsett’s path to the top of the Seahawks depth chart won’t be an easy one. Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf are the clearcut top wideouts. Dorsett will be jockeying for a spot as WR3 with David Moore, Josh Ursua and Freddie Swain, among others. But considering the similarities between Lockett and Dorsett’s games, perhaps Dorsett will be a valuable player in Seattle.
