Phillip Asset introduces digital tech fund

Phillip Asset Management has launched the Phillip World Innovation Fund (PWIN), the first offshore mega-trend fund in Thailand focusing on five themes related to digital technology.

PWIN has a policy to invest in offshore equity exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in five major themes comprising e-sport video games, cybersecurity, internet innovations, industrial innovations and bio-technology, said managing director Thiyachai Chong.

PWIN plans to invest in four ETFs initially -- ARK Innovation ETF, ETFMG Video Game Tech ETF, First Trust NASDAQ Cybersecurity ETF and ETFMG Prime Cybersecurity ETF.

The fund launched its initial public offering between Sept 24 and Oct 5, and the minimum investment amount is 5,000 baht.

PWIN wants to use big data as an investment tool to pick stocks for its portfolio, accelerating its capture of investment targets, said Mr Thiyachai.

Some global mega-trend sectors have continued to grow significantly and their business nature is different from investment philosophies in the past, he said.

For instance, e-sport video game businesses have millions of participants across the globe and revenue generated from gaming and cybersecurity has increased at a rapid pace as there is a greater need to spend more on upgrading cybersecurity, said Mr Thiyachai.

"These investment themes have never been seen in Thailand before," he said.

PWIN also has a policy to diversify investment risks by investing in the value chain of the aforementioned themes.

"If we can analyse big data information and changes in the global population as well as consumer behaviour accurately, investment in these mega-trend themes will generate a higher return without relying on market sentiment and investment opportunities," said Mr Thiyachai.

Phillip Asset Management's current assets under management are around 1.5 billion baht.
