The Phillies voted to not play Thursday night in Washington, a day after three major league games were postponed in response to the shooting last Sunday of Jacob Blake by police officers in Kenosha, Wis.
The team's decision, first reported by NBC Sports Philadelphia, came hours after the NBA said it would resume its playoffs this weekend after a boycott by some teams Wednesday put the postseason on hold.
The NHL reportedly has postponed its playoff games Thursday night, and some NFL teams canceled practices Thursday. The Phillies will play Friday night at Citizens Bank Park against Atlanta on the league-wide Jackie Robinson Day.
Joe Girardi said after Wednesday night's 3-2 win that he would support whatever decision his players made about playing.
"I would tell them to go with their heart," the Phillies manager said. "Feelings are feelings. They're never right or wrong. They're just feelings. You have to go with your heart and what your heart tells you. I would support them with whatever they did."
