Philippe Coutinho unlikely to play for Bayern again as Chelsea transfer target's future in doubt

Philippe Coutinho is not expected to play for Bayern Munich again after the Chelsea transfer target suffered a setback in his recovery from ankle surgery.

The Brazilian, who is on loan in Bavaria from Barcelona, had an operation last month and was expected to be fit enough to resume training at the end of May.

It has since been confirmed that there have been complications and he is now set to be out for at least six more weeks.

With the Bundesliga set to return this weekend that makes a comeback before the campaign concludes - subject to further coronavirus-related delay - unlikely.

Bayern are not currently planning to activate the €120million (£105million) option to buy in the deal and it is unclear if Coutinho will be given another chance at Barca next season under Quique Setien.

Chelsea have been keeping tabs on the attacker but would not be willing to pay £105million.

The 27-year-old has struggled to hit top form since leaving swapping Liverpool for Catalunya in an eye-watering £102million deal, with potential add-ons bringing the final bill to £142million.

He scored just five goals in 34 La Liga appearances last season before heading to Bayern, where he has often struggled to make the starting XI.

In 22 Bundesliga appearances he has found the net eight times and provided half a dozen assists.

Only Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry have scored more for Bayern; Thomas Muller and Gnabry have more assists. Despite those numbers he has been unable to nail down a place in Hansi Flick's starting XI.

Bayern have a four-point lead on top of the Bundesliga and return to action with a visit to Union Berlin on Sunday afternoon.
