Philippe Coutinho transfer blockbuster as Aston Villa and Steven Gerrard target sensational Liverpool reunion

Steven Gerrard is reportedly eyeing a sensational reunion with Philippe Coutinho at Aston Villa.

The former Rangers boss has hit the ground running in the West Midlands and, despite a recent slump, they are looking up the way rather than down in the second half of the season.

They are just three points off the top half of the Premier League table and while a European spot may be a distant ambition at this stage, they are determined to strengthen in January and shoot up the standings.

Villa were ambitious in the transfer market in the summer splashing out on Danny Ings, Emiliano Buendia and Leon Bailey after Jack Grealish's move to Manchester City.

And now it's claimed they are in talks to sign Brazil playmaker Coutinho on loan from Barcelona.

Coutinho spent two years playing alongside Gerrard at Liverpool and they came to within a whisker of the Premier League title together under Brendan Rodgers.

Spanish radio station COPE say Villa are in "direct contact" over a potential deal - but also say three other top English clubs are in the running.

Coutinho has also been linked with Leicester, Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton in the past.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano notes that the Villa move isn't a "done deal" yet but suggests it's further along than with the other clubs in the frame.
