Philippe Coutinho to Chelsea: Liverpool 'to miss out on millions' if Barcelona sell

Liverpool are set to miss out on millions should Chelsea sign Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona.

Coutinho moved to Camp Nou in January 2018 in a deal worth £141m, with Liverpool receiving £105m up front in a record fee recouped for a British team.

The remaining £36m is made up of performance-related add-ons, as is common in transfer agreements, according to Press Association.

Liverpool have recouped most of the clauses already, with the deals cleverly structured around the first 18 months of Coutinho's spell at Barcelona.

Since then, though, Coutinho has been on loan at Bayern Munich meaning further clauses are on hold until he plays for Barcelona again. Bayern reportedly paid £7.8m to take the midfielder on loan.

Here's a breakdown of what Barcelona have paid:

  • £4.5m for every 25 games, with a maximum of four payments
  • £4.5m for qualifying for Champions League in 2018/19
  • £4.5m for qualifying for Champions League in 2019/20

Here's what Liverpool have missed out on:

  • £4.5million if Barcelona win the 2018/19 Champions League

Here's what Liverpool could miss out on:

  • £4.5million if Barcelona win the 2019/20 Champions League
  • £9m for making 75 and 100 appearances for Barcelona

So, Liverpool could still recoup a further £4.5m from Barcelona should the club win the Champions League this season.

But if Chelsea do sign Coutinho on a permanent deal this summer, Liverpool could miss out on as much as £13.5m.
