Philippe Coutinho to Bayern Munich: Barcelona confirm Brazilian star is set to leave on loan

Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho is set to join Bayern Munich on a season-long loan deal, a club director has confirmed.

The 27-year-old was left out of the matchday squad for Barca's opening LaLiga fixture against Athletic Bilbao at San Mames, fuelling speculation that he was on his way out of the Camp Nou.

After Standard Sport revealed on August 12 talks were underway between the two clubs, the £142m playmaker is set for a new adventure in Germany after director of institutional relations, Guillermo Amor, revealed the deal was done.

“We can confirm that there is an agreement in principle with Bayern Munich for the loan of Coutinho,” Amor told Vamos before the game.

Coutinho, who earns around €12 million per season at Camp Nou, has struggled to adapt despite some highs in his 18 months with the Blaugrana.

The former Liverpool midfielder was strongly linked with a return to the Premier League, having been offered to Arsenal and Tottenham suggested at different stages of the summer transfer window, but a move failed to materialise.

Barca had offered Coutinho to Paris Saint-Germain in a player-plus-cash deal to re-sign Neymar and it is unclear how the Catalans will proceed in the pursuit of their former forward with the midfielder heading to Bayern.

The Spanish champions have already signed Antoine Griezmann, Frenkie de Jong, Junior Firpo and Neto already this summer.
